Exploring the remote and isolated Ka'u coastline, in the southern most district of the Big Island of Hawai'i, produces an unlikely source of material for an artist. Scattered along the coastal lava flows and beaches are piles of debris from countries throughout the Pacific Rim. Brought to the Hawaiian Islands by the circular currents which travel in a clockwise pattern, the debris includes flotsam of various shapes, sizes and material; fishing nets and floats from Asian fishing fleets, timber and logs from the Northwest Coast of the U.S.A., bottles, toys, rubber slippers, wooden pallets, lobster cages and pieces of ocean vessels. |

It's uncanny how you can hike for miles and not encounter another soul, yet the remnants and evidence of modern civilization is inescapable. In areas, the debris field rises as high as 6 feet, covering nesting areas for endangered turtles and polluting the once pristine ecosystems of the lava tide pools. The removal of this marine debris from our coastline became the inspiration for creating these pieces of mixed media sculpture. |
